Fun for all the family – Attractions at Gypsy Wood include…
Scenic Outdoor Railway – Gypsy Wood Railway was designed and built during 2004, although it has been extended since then. The scale is approximately 1:22.5 running on 45mm gauge track to represent mostly European metre gauge prototypes, a combination known as ‘G scale’. All of the track and most of the rolling stock is manufactured by the German company LGB/Bachmann although there are some British items built by the staff. The total track lay out is about 580 meters, arranged in eight circuits on the main layout plus three ‘self drive’ circuits. The locomotives cover some impressive mileage in the course of a season, for example the train on the main outside circuit covers in the region of 13km (7.8 miles) in a days operation, which add up to 91km (54 miles in a week). The layout is controlled by a bank of conventional model railway controllers, with no computers, which makes problem solving simpler, but does involve an awful lot of wire!
Wetland Walk – Our unique Wetland Walk is extremely popular. We recommend you bring your wellies as wetlands are transitional zones between land and water. The water is often near or above the land’s surface. These habitats range from marshes and wet meadows to wooded swamps. The Wetland Walk is just under 1/2 mile long and contains uneven surfaces. Ideal for spotting a host of mini beasts, butterflies and dragon flies, flowers vary due to flowering times. Freckles Frog is hiding under a stone!
