On the 21st of March 2005 a new nature reserve, which includes Wales's largest miniature railway, reopened following the winter closure as part of a new attraction in Gwynedd.

Gypsy Wood, situated between Bontnewydd and Caeathro, is owned by Christine and John Evans who own Welsh Historic Inns.

Twenty acres of their own land is now open to the public, including miniature farm animals, a large fishing lake with disabled access, and a protected wetland.

One of the biggest attractions at Gypsy Wood is Wales's largest miniature railway, which includes nine tracks of railway passing alongside a replica of Snowdon, and special children's railway section where they can see their own trains in motion.

John Pritchard, operations manager for Welsh Historic Inns, explained: "We have just over £10,000 worth of trains on the tracks. There is currently only one bigger miniature railway in Europe and that is in Holland."

Following on from the successful opening last year, there have been a few additions, with new things to see.

Visitors to the site can buy fairy memorabilia, miniature trains, miniature house kits and garden ornaments from the shop on site.

The main emphasis behind Gypsy Wood is that it is relaxing, and can be enjoyed by both families and individuals.

Christine explained: "It is a relaxing setting, with aviaries for little birds, a picnic area, ducks, a small children's play area. People can come here to get away from the pressures of life and just relax."

She went on to say: "We have left the area as natural as possible, and try to encourage children to respect nature and plant life not forgetting the animals. We have six paddocks with little pigs, miniature goats (look out for Gizmo), Rabbits, guinea pigs, Mediterranean miniature donkeys and miniature Shetlands. The children will also love Molly and Dolly our sheep"

The attraction includes a lake for fishing, which is fully stocked by the end of March.

Christine added: "I was sitting here thinking how beautiful it was and why couldn't other people enjoy it. We want to cater for the whole family, girls will like the little horses, granny will like the ducks and dad and boys will like the trains.

"It is nice to show people how nature and animals live together."

John Pritchard added: "It is not an adventure park. It is unique in North Wales, let alone in Caernarfon."
